Local residents from Adlington appeared on GB News today to voice concerns about the government’s proposed new town development in the area.
During the broadcast, Adlington’s own Aysha Hawcutt, Simon Gleave and Alex Kelsall spoke about the potential impact of plans to build up to 20,000 new homes on surrounding green belt and agricultural land. They highlighted the scale of the proposal and warned it would dramatically alter the character of Adlington, a small rural community.
The residents raised concerns about pressure on local infrastructure, including roads, schools and health services, or even employment opportunities.
Environmental issues also featured prominently, with speakers stressing the importance of protecting countryside, wildlife habitats and productive farmland.
We are, however, disappointed by what was not addressed. There was no explanation of how Adlington came to be shortlisted, nor any meaningful engagement with the 19,000-strong petition , which was dismissed by ministers, or with how local voices that were excluded from the decision-making process.
We also strongly disagree with the framing of this opposition as nimbyism, and with the lack of opportunity to respond to claims made by the YIMBY Alliance. We do not consider ourselves to be NIMBYs. All the issues raised speak to the suitability of the site, and they would still be issues whether we lived here or not.
