Stop the Destruction of Adlington
The small, rural village of Adlington and its surrounding greenbelt have been unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight. The government’s New Towns Task Force has identified the area as a potential site for a new town—one that could bring 14,000–20,000 new homes, built over nearly 2,500 acres of greenbelt and countryside.
This is not just a modest expansion, for a village of about 1,200 people, this proposal represents a transformation on a massive scale.
Why We’re Concerned
- Loss of Green Belt: Adlington is currently within the Cheshire Green Belt, this development would decimate nearly 1,000 hectares of countryside, farmland, ancient field patterns, and wildlife habitats.
- Threat to Rural Character:: The scale of development could erase Adlington’s identity, effectively merging it with nearby towns such as Macclesfield and Stockport, rather than remaining a standalone community.
- Infrastructure Overload: People already worry that the infrastructure here — from transport to services — is too limited.
- Environmental and Heritage Risks: Local campaigners, including CPRE Cheshire , have flagged serious environmental risks, including damage to agricultural land, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of historic landscapes.
Once the greenbelt is gone, it’s gone forever.
Standing Together
In response to this looming threat, several local groups have come together, united in their mission:
- To strategically oppose the New Town proposal through coordinated action.
- To safeguard Adlington’s greenbelt, rural heritage, and natural habitats.
- To raise public awareness, organise protests, and engage with local media.
- To work with political representatives, including our MP, to make our voices heard.
- To build a broad community movement, ensuring that existing residents, farmers, and nature-lovers all have a say.
Affected Area
An area of 2400 acres has been identified. Similar to the built area of Macclesfield.
Habitat
The Adlington area has 200 acres of woodland, 75 acres of ancient woodland, and a further 250 acres of tree-cover.
Our Biggest Protest Yet!
Today, Sunday 30th November 2025, more than 350 concerned residents and supporters gathered at the Poynton Relief Road roundabout in a dramatic show of opposition to the proposed development. The demonstration featured a parade of tractors and Land Rovers — a vivid symbol that this is a rural community determined to protect its land. Around 400 campaign badges were handed out to those in attendance, underscoring broad support across the community.
Upcoming Protest at Poynton Relief Road Roundabout
On Sunday 30th November we will be protesting at the Poynton Relief Road Roundabout.
